Hurricane Weekend: When World Collide

Since we were facing the big hurricane (Irene) I felt like some sort of less serious reading, so I tackled When Worlds Collide and After Worlds Collide by Philip and Edwin Balmer Wylie. It’s been quite a while since I read them, but I picked up the dual volume for $1 at a thrift and thought it was worth a read. Classic space opera kind of stories. It’s always striking how elements of the story (written in the early 1930s) just don’t work any more – some for technical reasons, others for social reasons and at times the writing is a smidgen overwrought. But still – a smashing story.
