Teach Like a Champion

I like to read one or two books a year that connect with my teaching responsibilities. I picked up Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov earlier this summer and have found it helpful. It’s a very specific and practical guide for teaching skills to be used primarily in K-12 settings. There are 49 techniques (at least numbered one; there are some assorted additional ones in the last few chapters). They are specific and give examples. Especially helpful is the fact that there is a DVD with video clips illustrating many of the techniques.

For a college instructor, not everything is equally valid. I’m not doing drill for the most part and the socialization of college students is a bit different than would be appropriate for some of the techniques. Nevertheless, there are a lot of good ideas. And college freshman, who are the majority of my students, are not that far from K-12. Highly recommended.
