The Food of a Younger Land

Mark Kurlansky’s The Food of a Younger Land is a fascinating window on American history, culture, and food. An edited reworking of a partially completed WPA writing project (which I had never heard about previously), it provides a glimpse of pre-franchise and pre-homogenized American culinary arts. The portraits of the various regions are interesting, the cultural and historical glimpses and interesting, and some of the food stuff (including lots of recipes) is just plain fun. Recommended for history buffs and/or culinary buffs. Or both.
